About Kern Latino

Well here we go.  I was thinking the inaugural post to this blog would be over something innocuous such as the weather (hot), the best tacos and chile verde in town (Tacos de Huicho 19th/Union – Arizona Cafe on Baker)…but no the first series will focus on the local Bakersfield Californian’s – local newspaper – decision to discontinue the more than a decade long column by Leonel Martinez.

This blog is not intending to replace nor compete with any established news outlets be they print, radio or television. Instead, as stated Kern Latino will reflect the occasional muse and views of interested and interesting individuals. We don’t always guarantee good writing, but we do hope you’ll find something that is interesting. Let us know if you have something to say.

In an attempt to blog a story in KernLatino about two local young men who are now Marines, I’m not sure how the Californian picked up the story but they did. They did publish my comments in the local section under “Your Words”
“Local Marines Get Top Honors” The story is about two young latinos, Stephen Felix Brewer and Eric Medrano both from McFarland that were recognized for their achievements in boot camp. The story was more on Stephen, but let me give a little more information on Eric Medrano. Eric was a runner at McFarland High and has garnered a roomful of throphies and medals per his dad, Trinitivo Medrano. Eric went on to Bakersfield College where he continued to win honors in track. Eric’s mom and dad are field workers and very proud of their son. Eric has returned to Camp Pendleton to continue training, Stephen upon returning to camp was put in charge of a platoon, way to go you guys, you make us proud.
